Preparing for Chicago Renegade Craft Fair

Leather Tags

Chicago Renegade Craft Fair is 10 days away and I am just now caught up on orders, but I haven't even begun to stock up my inventory for Renegade. That means I'm taking a break from the world [internet] for the next 9 days and will come back to you with an update on what will be available in Chicago. Trust me, you'll want to be there, because I have some really awesome leathers that aren't yet available online. Squeeee! :)

If you're in Chicago and have been wanting to see any particular bags, this is the time to let me know so I can make sure I have it at the show.

I'm really excited, guys. This is my first time in Chicago and The Boy and I are researching some must-see sites and food places. Any suggestions?

The Boy loves pizza. Thin crust, though.

Mattar Paneer

Paneer

Took a break with cooking and ate some of The Boy's mom's yummy Indian food that she packed for us. This time I tried paneer for the first time. I'm not even close to being vegetarian, but after eating this, I may consider... at least for one day per week. :)

Frankie

Frankie
Frankie

My second favorite dish that The Boy's mom prepares is Chicken Frankie. The Boy tells me this is the quintessential street food of Mumbai. I can see why, it's so delicious!

Okay, so maybe it's supposed to be eaten with roti instead of flour tortillas, and an onion/cilantro topping rather than pico de gallo. But I can't help but change things up a little. :)

I don't have the recipe (because The Boy's Mom sent these home to us to warm up), but I can taste tumeric, chili peppers, ginger (?), cumin, and some other yummy spices. Definitely tumeric - the yellow coloring gave that away.

I'll have to find out these recipes so I can make them myself.

Austin Fashion Week: Awards

On the red carpet
Red Carpet

I have to say, this Boy is my arm candy during all these fashion events.  He picks out all his clothes and I don't have a single worry except that my fingers are doing some sort of weird Vulcan salute. What is with that?

Back to the topic. I originally had a vintage 1970s gown purchased to wear to the event, but when I found out what The Boy was wearing, I quickly changed my mind.  It happens.  I bought this from Banana Republic a while ago and have only worn it once on a date with The Boy. The shoes are Kenneth Cole. The Clutch is obviously mine. :) My nails are painted with American Apparel "Mousse".

The Boy is wearing a Calvin Klein button down, and that's all I know about his outfit because I was with him during that purchase. I love the chest pockets.  Men with 5 o'clock shadows and chest pockets go really well together.

Oh, you want to know what happened at the award ceremony? I didn't win anything but I do want to thank you so much for voting for me and showing so much love and support!! I really appreciate it! :)

One of THOSE days...

You know those days where things tend to not go in your favor? Today was one of those for me.

It started with a check that I received in the mail that I've been requesting for the past 5 months. It came in but it was missing 40% of the money that was deposited. The background is a long story, but the moral of the story is that you should never give anyone a check unless you have 100% guarantee that they have an apartment for you. And the leasing agent that works with you doesn't get pregnant (he was male, but he said he was pregnant, I guess guys say that when their wives are pregnant) in the middle of trying to help you get that apartment. And when you ask for a refund, the guy actually ended up quitting the job and never told you. And when you call again, the only person who can deal with the finances finds out her nanny and kid got in a major car accident on the exact day you decided to call. And then the next time you call, everyone in the company quit except for one agent and one manager. And then you call again and the manager was fired and they replaced her with an assistant manager and the paperwork for your check refund was sitting on ex-manager's desk the entire time she was fired and no one saw the paper work. And then the next time you call there's finally someone competent enough to handle the situation. But then you find out that they're incompetent because they only sent you 60% of the refund, 5 months after contacting them once every 2 weeks to get the refund (yes, I am persistent).

Anyway, I called them and they quickly agreed to send the check immediately. Finally, better customer service. I may be speaking too soon. I'll let you know when the rest of the check comes in.

Ending TBD.

That already put me in a sour mood, but I continued driving around town to run errands.

I'm on my way home and my car makes a funky noise. It stalls in the middle of the road. I turn on my emergencies, put the car in park, try to restart. It makes a really weird noise and goes a couple feet and stops again. Now it won't turn on. I call The Boy to help me and have to quickly hang up because I have about 10 minutes of battery life left in my phone (what timing, right?) and at that point I'm pretty much in tears because I'm so frustrated with the day. And the heat. God the heat. That will make you delirious.

I pop open the hood and nothing looks overheated or anything. But I give up on trying to figure things out and just wait for The Boy. Dozens of cars pass by me (this is during lunch rush hour) and one guy in a military uniform offers helps. In my crying delirium I tell him my boyfriend will be there shortly.  He hesitates, but then drives off.  It's not like I can think straight anyway in the 100+ degree heat with a broke down car.  More cars pass by and about 15 minutes elapse before one car stops in front of mine and two nice guys walk out and tell me that we need to move my car out from the middle of the road because it's really dangerous. That actually never came to my mind. But I guess if a car rear ended me, I could use that money towards a new car...

I put the car in neutral and they push my car to the nearest parking lot. I thank them and they remind me to go inside and get some water because it's really hot outside. Good idea.

The Boy comes and all is well.  My car's fate is still TBD.

But now all I can think of is eating some wings.

Hot Wings

And getting back to work, because I'm now 2 days behind on my shipping schedule, and this just exacerbated things.

p.s. Those wings are marinated with a spicy rub that I made up and a large bottle of hot sauce. It's grilled to perfection with a lovely char. My favorite.

I feel so tall in these

My really tall Aldo booties

Ever since I wore these, I've been looking for more really tall shoes. It's so much fun to not be 5'2". These make me shy of 5'8". Still shorter than The Boy, so he's fine with it. But he's NOT OK with my whining when they start hurting after standing and dancing for 4 hours. Details.

Urban Betty Salon and I hosted our party for Austin Fashion Week last Friday. It was a blast! Very laid back and gave us the opportunity to meet with our friends. Thank you for coming and showing us lots of love! We greatly appreciate it! :)

Tommy (my teammate photographer for the mash-up teams) came by and took pictures. I posted a couple - one with me next to my display and one with The Boy and our friends Brian and Danielle.  The last one reminds me that I hate being at the edge of pictures because it makes me look humongous. Oh well, The Boy looks good. :)

More updates to come! So much work to do before I can post more detailed entries, but I wanted to post something to let you know that I'm alive and well. At least for now. :(

p.s. I'm wearing an Old Navy jumper from Spring 08 that I thrifted (and ended up dropping a yummy Polka Dot Cupcake Factory chocolate cupcake on before the event started, which is that brown smudgey stuff near my right pocket, sad). Belt is from Charlotte Russe.  I'm wearing my Traveler in Zebra and the most important thing that isn't pictured are my awesome 6" (yes, SIX INCHES) Aldo brown leather ziptop booties. I was a whopping 5'8" that night! But still shorter than most of my friends.  Oh well.  I tried.

p.p.s. Doesn't Jamie look lovely with the Baby Ruche in Pumpkin? Her hair! Love!

p.p.p.s. With the World Map background and my outfit, the first image kind of reminds me of Banana Republic when they were still a travel and safari company.

Baby Ruche in Aztec Brown Leather

Baby Ruche Bag in Aztec Brown Leather

If you felt this leather, you would fall in love with it. It's a super soft squishy leather with nice pebbly grain. It's got a great drape and has light brown tones throughout. I mean, it is gorgeous. One of the most gorgeous and soft leathers I've ever worked with. I'm tempted to keep one for myself...

You can see more details here in my shop.

Lasagna

Lasagna (Indian-Style)

One of the perks of The Boy going back home to Pittsburgh to visit his family is that he comes back with a gold mine of yummy Indian food courtesy of his mom. And his visit came at the perfect time when I'm really busy preparing orders and stocking for Renegade Chicago. I don't have to cook for a while! :)

One of my favorite dishes? Lasagna. It's not just a regular lasagna. It's super-spicy lasagna with an Indian twist. So delicious. I may have to get the recipe from The Boy's mom, but not anytime soon, because I love being spoiled and just popping her food in the microwave and serving it.  At least while work in the shop is a little crazy... :)

Hey Cupcake!

Hey Cupcake!
Hey Cupcake!

The Boy and I had some sweet tooth cravings - so we stopped by Hey Cupcake! I tried the newest Sweetberry (strawberry cupcake with strawberry cream cheese frosting). I like it, but not as much as our favorites: Red Velvet and 24 Carrot!

Okay, now that I have those cravings out of the way, time to get back to work. Lots to do this week!

Have you voted? If not, I'd love your vote for Austin Fashion Week!

Psst. I'm wearing a lovely dress from lamixx on Etsy.  Love Jacqueline's designs --I think have purchased almost everything from her collection.  Or at least I'm close. Her designs are so comfortable and can be worn dressy or casual. Love love.

I'll be posting more updates on Austin Fashion Week all week! Stay tuned!

Sushi Rolls

Sushi Rolls
Sushi Rolls

I occasionally have a sushi craving. And because I'm not a big sushi snob, make my own little "fake rolls.  I bought some smoked salmon, cucumber, baby carrots, cream cheese and seaweed wrap to make these. Success in my book because the only real work I have to do is press "COOK" on my rice cooker. And cut the ingredients. And mix the rice with rice wine vinegar. And then assemble these rolls when the guys get home from work.  But really, it's so little work compared to other dishes I typically make.

I buy the horse radish "wasabi" in a tube and the pickled ginger in a jar. Easy peasy, huh?

p.s. On really good days, I'll season and brown panko in the frying pan and dip these guys in it for extra crunch. Didn't have time this time, but it is extra good if you're a fan of fried crunchiness.

Vote for me for Austin Fashion Awards?

Traveler in Burnt Orange Canvas

Hey Ya'll!

As you know, I own a lot of cowboy boots. But there's one boot that I don't own, and I would love to have it in my studio.  It is the Austin Fashion Awards Golden Cowboy Boot! It would just be one boot. And it may not be my size. But I'm OK with that. If I won this, it would go in my studio and it would remind me of you, because you helped me win it. Your vote is greatly appreciated. Because if you vote for me, I'll know that you love me. And my bag business.

Shrimp Tempura

Shrimp Tempura
Shrimp Tempura

Sometimes, when you're really lazy and haven't gone grocery shopping in a week because your boyfriend is out of town and your brother ate out already and you don't want to jump in your car to get anything because it's a 20-year old clunker with no AC,  you resort to looking in the fridge for some inspiration. Eggs and leftover pho noodles. Then in the freezer. Frozen shrimp. Avoiding the obvious shrimp noodle omelet, you go to the pantry.  Flour, baking powder.  Tempura!!

Shrimp tempura on a bed of pho noodles, shredded lettuce and baby carrots with nuoc mam.

It was really good except for the noodles. Pho noodles are definitely meant for pho only. I would use regular vermicelli noodles next time, but I didn't want to cook any more than I had to. :)

New: Baby Ruche in Treetop Green Leather

(Inside) Baby Ruche in Treetop Green
Baby Ruche in Treetop Green

Finally, this leather has magically morphed into this purse after nearly a month.  It's hard to get new leathers out there unless they are custom ordered by someone asking for other leather colors available (which I really encourage!). Otherwise, I have to sneakily slip a new bag in a batch of current orders so I can have something new to offer. And still get them all done within the 2 week turnaround time.

I wonder if it's a good time to hire some help. I am a little swamped. But nothing totally unmanageable. It's just a little tough this week because I'm making orders AND trying to make items to stock in my little showcase at Urban Betty Salon for Austin Fashion Week.  Then there's Renegade Chicago in September. And then the holidays....

I won't think about it and just continue sewing.

Hope you enjoy the new bag! I love it. It's super soft and smooth. And I love my new photography spot. It gets lots of sunlight even in the evening.

Chao Ga

Chao Ga

This is the best remedy for being sick.

Ingredients
Chicken (I use a whole chicken, cut in half)
Ginger, sliced into small medallions
Chicken broth
Fish Sauce
Onion, diced
Garlic, diced

Sweat onion and garlic, add ginger. Salt and pepper chicken and place skin side down in pot. Let it sear and then add water (and some chicken broth) to just cover chicken. Bring to boil and add fish sauce. Simmer until chicken is cooked. Remove chicken, cut or peel into large shreds. Add uncooked (or cooked for faster results) rice and cook until they start to open (this makes it extra thick). Add chicken back in and serve with green onion and cilantro.

Yum!

Tuna Sandwich

Tuna Sandwich
Tuna Sandwich

This is a true story of a conversation I just had with my brother, Chris.

Me: Hey Chris, what are you eating for lunch?
Chris: Tuna, bread, mustard...
Me: Tuna sandwich?
Chris: Kind of...

I look over and he literally has a loaf of bread, an open can of tuna, a bottle of mustard and a fork. He was going to put untreated tuna on a piece of untoasted, unbuttered bread and splatter mustard on top to eat.

Me: Move, I'm making you a real sandwich.
Chris: Can't deny that!

I take out the baby carrots, celery, mayonnaise, salt, pepper, and garlic powder. I finely dice the veggies and toss them in a bowl with tuna, mayo, spicy mustard, and sprinkle in salt, pepper and garlic powder. If I had apples in the fridge, I would include that, but I didn't.

Chris: This is way too much work. You remind me of that mouse on Ratatouille and I'm like the fat brother who eats whatever.
Me: That is totally going in my blog!

I make him two sandwiches because he just came back from running 10.5 miles (!!!!) for marathon training. I finish the sandwiches on a buttered skillet. Cut, plate, serve.

Me: Ta-da!
Chris: Wow, that looks fancy...[trying to take the plate]
Me: Wait, you can't eat it yet. I have to take a picture.
Chris: WTF? Fine.

Pho Ga

Pho Ga
Pho Ga

I've been sniffling all weekend (so far). I'm sick. Which is bad for this week because next week is Austin Fashion Week. Anytime I feel symptoms of getting a cold, I immediately go to recipes like Pho Ga and Chao Ga (with lots of ginger). I will be cured soon.

I don't have time to post my recipe but I will soon!

In the meantime, I will be slaving away in the studio preparing orders and getting ready for AFW!

New: Briefcases in Corduroy

Two new Briefcases have been added to the shop!

I also found a great new spot to photograph my bags. Two pieces of good news in one day. Weehoo!

Grilled Baby Back Ribs

Grilled Pork Ribs

I made ribs last night. It was my first time and it was a success. Ribs were on sale so I thought I would try a spice rub that I made up. It consists of most of the non-Asian spices I have in my cabinet (garlic powder, salt, pepper, paprika, cumin, chili powder... I think that's it?). Let it marinade overnight and then grilled them the next day.

I bought intensely sweet corn and literally just plopped them as is on the grill in the last 10 minutes of the cooking process. Butter and salt would have made this taste amazing, but I have to cut calories somewhere. :)

I took some pictures with my iPhone while out on the grill. The right burner is a bit intense and so I have to do a bit of rotating to get everything to cook evenly. I make it work...

Behind the Scenes: Austin Fashion Week Photoshoot

Austin Fashion Week Photo Shoot

Austin Fashion Week Photo Shoot
Photos taken at the Renaissance Hotel Presidential Suite

Check out (and vote for) our final photo at Austin Fashion Week. We'd appreciate your vote! :)

The photoshoot was fun and tiring. It's a completely different experience compared to photographing your own product. You just fix little things here and there on an inanimate object and voila, picture perfect. But when you have your product, other designer's products, hair, makeup, clothes, a model and a photographer, there are a lot of hands fixing little things and voices coming from all directions to move your chin here, arms there, hips here, fingers there, look here. It's a really amazing experience.

Every now and then I would fix the look of the bag, Shaesby would rearrange jewelry, Martha would fix hair, and Bridal Motif would fix the garment. All while Tommy is trying to get the perfect picture of Symon that portrays ALL of our pieces perfectly.

I have a whole new appreciation for fashion photography now.

And speaking of showing some love, you can also vote for me for AFW! I'd appreciate the love and support! :)

If you're in/around Austin during AFW, come join my Designer Showcase Sponsor, Urban Betty Salon and me at Nomad Bar for our Cocktails and Couture party! RSVP here.

p.s. I have been totally in love with Bridal Motif's dress since I saw it.  The Boy is Indian and you can only imagine how many marriage hints I've been dropping all over the place so I can wear that dress at my wedding. Keep in mind, I am NOT that type of girl who dreams of her wedding. Probably because I have never been a fan of a white dress? I look bad in white. But I love love silk and gold. And red! My parents had two ceremonies for their wedding and for the traditional Vietnamese one, my mom wore a beautiful red "ao dai" (traditional Vietnamese dress) with a phoenix embroidered on it in gold silk thread (she still  has it and I wish I were a little bit smaller to fit it, sad). It's beautiful.

I guess it just takes the right dress and accessories. Oh, and guy. Of course.
