Burnout

Rollerskate Burnout Baseball Tee by WrenWillowRollerskate Burnout Baseball Tee from WrenWillow
 Pug Earrings from Plastique

I have a thing for burnout shirts now. I don't know what about it I like. Softness? The style? Partial-see-through-ness? ::shrugs::

Whatever the reason, when I have a "thing" for something, I tend to amass a collection over a short period of time.

Examples:
1. I have 6 of the exact same American Apparel acid wash deep v's, differing only in color.
2. I have 4 off-shoulder tops from lamixx, differing in color and fabric type.
3. I have god-only-knows-how-many vintage cowboy boots.
4. When Hubert came into my life, I wanted 4 more little snorty pugs...

...what... shopping problem? ...no...

Back to burnouts, I've got 5 now -- 3 from WrenWillow.  I may have my collection, but honestly, I am really loving the ones I have from WrenWillow. The ink is SO SOFT, like it's not even there. I have no idea what kind of ink she uses to print these but it is so incredibly soft.  Very different from other screen printed shirts that I have.  Considering the price is comparable to other tshirt shops, I'm really impressed!

Maybe you can figure out her secret; she posted her process on her Facebook page

p.s. I'm not buying anymore, Mom, don't worry.  I have to replace the alternator on my car and replacing it is equivalent to a month's rent! Oy. The ONLY downside to living sale-to-sale --can't depend on the same paycheck to come in every two weeks. :(

Goodbye, Austin

i heart Texas necklace from truche

From the title, you can guess what the big news is. Yep, The Boy and I are moving. In TWO WEEKS! He got a great job opportunity which happens to be in the same city as his parents, brother and sister-in-law -- Pittsburgh!

This is very bittersweet for me because I spent the last six years in Austin. I went to college here, earned an engineering degree and ended up discovering my passion, which is now my career.  Austin is where I set up my HQ and started my business from scratch! I've made so many life-long friends here and am very sad to leave.

However, I have done a lot of moving from state to state and I am always excited about an opportunity to move into a new place and discover new things and meet new people, so I took this news with utmost positivity!

Pittsburgh Skyline by Prints 'n' Ribbons

Good things to come from this move?

  • I will be just a short flight (or 7 hour drive) from Chicago and NYC. That means MORE appearances at vendor events near two of my largest customer bases!
  • I will get to see changing seasons! I love snow and will hopefully get used to the cold. But I may not enjoy it as much at first as I do love my Texas heat. :)
  • Pittsburgh Steelers! The Boy recruited me to be a fan when we started dating, and I've been a fan ever since.
  • Hubert can breathe! Like most brachycephalic dogs, they can't stand the heat, and the Texas heat takes quite a toll on this little smooshed face baby. So, colder weather means better breathing (and longer walks, yay!).
  • We'll be near family! I've never been away from my family, and The Boy hasn't lived near his family in about 10 years, so this will be an interesting change. I will definitely be learning some super-secret Indian family recipes that I will super-secretly share with you, too! ;)

In the meantime, The Boy and I are working hard to make sure our move is smooth and successful -- especially because I have to move my entire business during the busiest time of the year for me and I'm hoping that I don't have to shut down my shop and that I can continue to work up until our move-out and into our temporary living and into our permanent residence (we're still looking for a place!).

Which reminds me. The holidays are JUST around the corner.  Remember that I have a three-week turnaround time, so the earlier you order your holiday gifts, the more likely I can have them delivered before Christmas!

Back to work + packing + organizing!

Mmm, Frosty!

Traveler in Frost White Leather

Well, it has been requested that I have white leather available in my shop for those who are immaculately clean. Your wish has been granted, my friends.

Frost Leather is now available for custom order in all bag designs.  Ready to ship in the Traveler (Listing to come, though if you know you want this, you can message me and I will list it faster. Otherwise, it'll be in the shop by the end of the week)!

In the meantime, I also decided to try out my new remote for my camera. It's great! The only downside is that my lens is a manual focus, so my pictures will probably end up a little blurry until I get a new lens with a motor.  In due time.  At least now I can model more of my bags more often.

And I bet you're wondering about that tee I've got on.  It's from WrenWillow - it's so soft, comfy and the designs are simple and wearable over and over again. I must buy more. And indeed I did. Two more. Pictures coming soon. :)

Okay. I'm avoiding the really important news now. Well, guess what?! I get to tell you TODAY! After lunch. I am getting the final "go" at that time so that I can finally tell you what I've been waiting to tell you!

Just Sitting, Eating an Omelet

Mushroom and Spinach Omelet

Just a quiet morning here in the apartment eating a spinach and mushroom omelet as I listen to the soft snoring of Hubert. Nothing really happening on this lovely Saturday early morning...

Except my parents are coming to visit in 5 hours (!!!!!) and the apartment is a mess and The Boy is out of town and my brother is running 20 miles right now to prepare for a marathon!! I'm all by myself and I have to clean up this place before they come. Well, Hubert is here, but he is no help.

5 hours. You may think that's a lot of time, but you have no idea how particular my parents are (how particular my mom is).

Granted, the apartment isn't really a mess. To the normal spectator, it is actually very clean and organized. But to someone like my mom, it's a mess. But that's because her house is like a Class 1 Cleanroom.

Oh, and I know you're still waiting on the news from me. And like all big things, they need finalizing and stuff, and it's still in the final stages before I can share it. I feel bad that I've lead you on and made you think I would tell you sooner than I should. And I feel even worse that I keep making it worse. Oh man, it's such good news. So so good. ;)

Q: How did you go full-time on Etsy?

I get a version of this question very often, so I figured I should write a post covering this topic so I can link back to it when asked again. :)

Note: I have never had the luxury of having a stable income, ever.  I don't know what it feels like to make the same paycheck every other week, so going full-time was not a tough decision for me.  Ignorance is bliss, right?

Anyway, I decided to switch from Biomedical Engineering to designing hand bags because I love fashion. Way more than medicine.  So then I thought, "If I can design medical devices, I can certainly design hand bags that are both aesthetically appealing and high in utility, right?"  I'm an engineer, afterall! :)

That leads me to my first point.

1. Be Confident (Believe in Yourself)
It's a competitive world out there. For as many people who LOVE your product, you'll run into 5X more who HATE your product, and maybe hate you, too. And hate what you stand for. And they'll tell you. Not in a tactful way, either. Develop thick skin and keep going. I have a wonderful support group (parents, brother, boyfriend, dog) who continually feed me positive energy when I run into mean/negative people.

2. Offer a High Quality Product
Starting a business from scratch is difficult when you don't have any start-up funds. I had to start with the highest quality of supplies that I could afford at the time with the money I made teaching Yoga, Pilates and doing graphic design work for start-up biotech companies while in college (and racking up tuition debt). Then I needed to make enough sales to buy higher quality supplies to make my products. It takes time, but always use the highest quality that you can afford. It will pay off in due time.

Price your product appropriately. Here's a possible formula:

(Supplies x 2) + (Hourly Wage x Hours) = Wholesale Price
Wholesale x 2 = Retail Price

To keep my products affordable, my formula is very close to the wholesale formula --which is why I don't work on wholesale or consignment basis (which is why you don't see my bags in stores or boutiques). When things get unmanageable for me to be the sole proprietor and I need to hire help and/or expand my brand, I will make improvements and adjust my prices accordingly.

3. Calculate Your Salary

Rent/Mortgage + Tuition + Phone + Dog_Supplies + Car + Gas + Insurance + Food + Utilities  = Basics_Year

Etsy/PayPal Fees + Product_Supplies + Shipping_Supplies + Tools + Vendor_Events + Travel + Advertising + Misc_Services = Business_Year

Basics_Year + Business_Year =  Yearly_Expenses

Yearly_Expenses/12 = Required_Monthly_Sales

Yearly_Expenses/365 = Required_Daily_Sales

Desired_Salary - Yearly_Expenses = Profit
Desired_Salary/12 = Ideal_Monthly_Sales

Knowing your required DAILY sales will make sure that you stay on track with promoting your product and will keep you from the temptation to buy more supplies than you need because it will start eating up your Profit.

It has been 1 year since I started full-time, and since I avoided splurging on luxury items, I managed to recover my Yearly_Expenses. My next goal is to reach my Desired_Salary.

When I reach my Desired_Salary,  I can then start thinking about investing in an IRA and planning for the future. Baby steps.

4. Take Beautiful Photos
Good advertising starts with good photography. No matter how good you think your photos are, they aren't good enough.

I am still improving. I will always be improving.

I started with an inexpensive point-and-shoot and now use an inexpensive DSLR.  I depend on my composition to keep me from having to do anything fancy to show off my products. I try to make my products speak for themselves. I do very little manipulation to the photos, usually just adjusting brightness and saturation because my camera tends to make pictures look TOO saturated, so I end up de-saturating the photo so that it looks as true as I see it.

5. Be Honest - Use Facts
People don't like to be pressured into buying. If you have accomplished #1, #2, and #4, you can trust that your products will sell. People can see quality and will pay for it. Hard selling your product will only turn off your customer. Rather than concluding that a customer may need one of my more expensive products, I just use facts to let the customer decide which product is best for them.

For instance, if a customer asks what bag would best fit their necessities, I state the dimensions of all my products and let them decide which size will best work for them. I sell with facts, because facts don't have bias and customers do. Let the customer decide.

6. Join the Social Network
In addition to the marketing that Etsy does for their venue, I use Twitter, Facebook, and this blog to keep the world updated on my business. This also gives me the opportunity to get real-time feedback on new products, new supplies, etc. Staying in touch with your audience gives your audience a look inside your life and let them know that they are buying a product from a real person.

7. Join a Team
I joined a treasury-making team on Etsy because I love to make treasuries (the collection of items you see on the front page of Etsy, they are curated by Etsy users and some are published to the front page). I am now one of the leaders on that team. I love it and it makes the Etsy community feel a little big smaller and more personal.

It's good to find support outside of your direct friends and family. A group who understands the nature of your business. They will end up being some of your closest friends. :)

8. Invest in Advertising
This requires research and is completely optional. It's a good supplement for slow months.  Make sure the blog/website reaches your target audience and is in your budget. A graphic that is simple, appealing, and makes people go, "Hmmm... ::click!::" is your key to success.

9. Participate in Vendor Events
I just recently started doing this because I can finally afford traveling to sell my products in person.  I receive very few sales from Texas, so my instincts tell me that I may not find a lot of success selling in person in Texas.  Though I do get many orders from Chicago, so I participated in Renegade Chicago and sold half of my inventory (25 bags). I went against my instincts and tried an event in Austin two weeks later and sold 2 of my 50 pieces of inventory. I didn't even break even with the event cost after 1 week of non-stop sewing + 22 hours of sitting at the 2-day event.  I cried.  But then I remembered #1 and #2 and just filed that experience under "Hard Lessons Learned" and now fully understand the quote, "Go with your gut."

Follow your historical sales. Mine are in SF, LA, Chicago and NY. So you'll find me at more shows in those areas in the future!

10. It's OK to Say No
I get a lot of questions to participate in this vendor event, sponsor that blog, modify my bags this way, and trade with that seller.  If you don't want to do it, say no. Nicely, of course.

Remember: Time is money. If you spend your time doing things that don't pay off, you've lost money. Spend your time and money wisely!

11. Why Etsy?
I chose Etsy because it is the best market for selling handmade products. Period. Nothing can compete with the marketing and networking that Etsy invests in their venue.

This is not, by all means, an all-inclusive formula to going full-time, but some of the items that I felt should be in the Top 10 (well, 11) for turning your hobby into your full-time job. If you have anything that you'd like to add or any questions, please feel free to post them in the comments section.

p.s. I only have 2 more of the Traveler in Orange/Brown Plaid left (pictured above).  If I can't find more of that fabric, it'll be sold out! :D

Holy Guacamole!

Guac

I made guac for the first time. It was good.  Can you mess up guacamole, though?  I don't think so.

2 avocados
1 roma tomato
1/3 red onion
serrano pepper
cilantro
lime juice
salt

...and my secret. A tablespoon or more of sour cream to round it all out.

Actually I only added sour cream because I added too much lime the first go and it I needed something to mellow it out and I ran out of avocados. Tastes creamy but still good I'd say.

I've been MIA

Hubert in American Apparel T

The past week has been quite a roller coaster of emotions, and now that things are finalizing, I am closer and closer to sharing some big news (dealing with my life and business). It's good news. Maybe slightly bittersweet. But until that happens, I just want to let you know that I am still alive and well.

I'm catching up on all my orders and hoping to clear my clip board of invoices this week so I can prepare for the holiday rush. I kind of regret not hiring a little bit of help, but I'm managing. If you're waiting for your order, they will be out at the end of this week!

More details at the end of this week! I promise!

Kiwi and Frost

It's been a busy week. I'm a little behind on orders so I'll keep this short and sweet.

I have new leathers. They are great. Here are 2 of the 10.

Kiwi
White

The Kiwi leather is absolutely marvelous. Remember that Avocado leather I had? Well, similar color (this one has a hint more yellow) and this one has little brown flecks scattered throughout the hide. Looks like kiwi fruit!

And white. Oh white, white, white. I've only had two requests for white since the existence of my shop. I am surprised that women want a white bag. They are brave. And probably very clean and tidy. Unlike me.

After a year and a half thinking about it, I finally invested in some. I call it Frost.  ::chills::

Both of these are available for custom orders, so if you would like a bag in either of these two colors, send me a message on Etsy!

And the other 8?

Well, I'll give you a hint. Since five of the new pieces arrived, my entire studio smells of patent leather. Yep! You guessed it. Patent leather. Five luscious colors that I will photograph tomorrow. :)

Oh, and the other 3?

Hint: It starts with "crocodile" and ends in "printed leather".

Back to Basics

Back to Basics

No matter what brightly colored leathers I find and how much I love them, basics are always the most coveted. And when I can find a color that is almost neutral like this Sage or Dark Plum, those go in 1-2 weeks time and are never seen again. Because I can never find those again.

I get some of my best leathers from large upholstery remnants - the unused scraps that furniture companies toss out (not really toss out, they sell them). I dig in 500lb tubs full of luscious scrap leather and dig, dig, dig for the most beautiful supple leathers. The distressed leathers are my favorite. And they are loved by all who get their hands on a bag made of them. They are always in super-limited supply and always sell out quickly.

But the ones that stay in my shop for a long time and are always loved are the basics. Black, grey, and brown. I was organizing my studio and found a box with some leather already cut that I probably worked on before I moved to my new apartment. One of the piles had the parts to a Clutch in Dark Plum (which sold out in 2 weeks). I've listed it in the shop and hopefully it will find a loving home, soon.
