Dumpling Obsession

Boy was talking to his mom on the phone earlier this week and I heard him say, "Oh, she made some dumplings for dinner. They were awesome!"

Okay. So. For the past few weeks everyone (Boy, brother-in-law, and sister-in-law) has been telling my mother-in-law that I've been making "dumplings" and totally not describing them at all.  MIL probably thinks I'm feeding her family the same dumplings every day for the past month.

I wish these people were more descriptive.

In my defense, when I figure out new cooking techniques, I tend to obsess over them and try a bunch of new things with said technique. This past month, it has been stuffing everything in a wonton wrapper, boiling it, and serving it with some sort of soup or sauce:

(parenthesis indicates what went into the wonton wrapper; they were put in a food processor before stuffing into wontons)

1. (salmon + green onion + cilantro) + potato soup* = salmon ravioli
2. (beef + onion + Italian seasoning) + pasta sauce = beef ravioli
3. (chicken + green onion + cilantro + onion) + [chicken broth + seasame oil] = chicken wonton soup
4. (tofu + cabbage + carrot + cilantro) + [veggie broth + miso paste] = vegetarian wonton soup
5. (shrimp + cabbage + carrot + cilantro) + fried in oil = shrimp and vegetable gyoza
6. (spinach + cheese) + potato soup = awesomeness

*I make my potato soup by dicing and boiling potatoes, celery, onion and carrot in chicken broth, then blending it with a stick blender until smooth. Then I add a little milk and salt to taste.

So you can see, I've fed these people a variety of items in the form of wontons which I've folded in various ways to keep it interesting.

I don't get enough credit.

Oh, why is the image above of sushi? I didn't take any pictures of my wonton phase.

And sushi is my newest obsession. :)

Ricky Colson

My first love of art came with painting.  I remember in 1st grade, I told my mom that when I grew up, I would be a painter.  Even though I got the (typical Asian parent) response, "Sure! You can be a painter on the side when you're a brain surgeon!", it didn't really stop me from pursuing a future in art (16 years later).  I'm not a painter now, nor am I a brain surgeon, but I'm proud to know some really great painters!  (Even though I am a little envious of their profession.)  :)

I've mentioned Ricky Colson before.  While I'm a huge fan of his highly-detailed paintings playing with size and scale, I am really loving his new series of paintings and prints featuring animal silhouettes!

He's got an Etsy shop, too!

Memory Lane: New Orleans

image via

All this talk about Mardi Gras got me craving all my cajun favorites from childhood. (I was born in New Orleans.)

Okay, so I left New Orleans when I was eight years old... so my memory of the cajun culinary cuisine is a bit fuzzy.  When I think "New Orleans", I think of three really awesomely awesome things: Popeyes, King Cake, and Crawfish.

Why those three?

Popeyes
Popeyes fried chicken happened to be the first piece of meat I ever ate apparently.

(My brother ate steak and lobster as his first meaty meal and I ate fried chicken? C'mon Mom. Seriously?)

My mom told me that she would peel tiny pieces of fried chicken and place it on my highchair tabletop and I would grab the tiny piece with my entire hand and smear it all over my face.  It's actually not unlike the way I eat fried chicken now.  Well.  Except for the highchair.  I'm a big girl, after all.

King Cake
I remember in Kindergarten during Mardi Gras, we would get to eat a piece of King Cake after nap time. Well, I never napped (I always untied my shoes as an excuse to get up and have my teacher tie my shoes, even though I knew good and well how to tie my shoes.  Ms. Bailey eventually gave up and let me stay awake and paint on the easel in the hallway during nap time.) --so I never got King Cake.

Instead, my parents would buy a King Cake from the grocery store and I would poke through the entire cake to find the piece with the plastic baby inside.

(Do they still do that? It seems dangerous now that I think about it).

Crawfish
You can't live in New Orleans and not get invited to 10 billion crawfish parties.  My family and I went to at least 20 billion in my 8 years of living there, and my brother and I inhaled pounds of crawfish.  No potatoes or corn.  Just crawfish.

I'm pretty sure we would win a crawfish peeling and eating contest.  Pretty sure.

Longingly dreaming of spicy fried chicken,
Jenny

Join: The Excessory Club

Dear Friends,

I have some of the very best customers ever.  So much so, that I started an unofficial free shipping club some time ago when I noticed a handful of customers who regularly come back (like super(!!!) regularly) and shop with me.  These ladies have been so supportive in my wee little business -- I wanted to return the favor.

Then, I wanted something a bit more official.  Something with tiers and involved some software development.  That's where Boy came into play.  He was extremely supportive and helpful in developing a tool for a Jenny N. rewards program, which he cleverly named "The Excessory Club". Yeah, that was his idea.  I was just going to go with "Jenny N. Rewards Program".

Did I mention that he named the Packet? Yeah, he's a good one that one.

Well, it's finally ready for reveal!

We hope you love it.

Love,
Jenny & Boy

Happy Valentine's Day!

I know.  This is a weird Valentine's card.  Green onions?  Really, Jenny?

Yeah, I'm kind of obsessed with my green onions that I learned to re-grow.

If you didn't know about this, now you do.  And we can be happy and joyous together! :)

Sunny Park Days

We've had some days of snow this winter, but for the most part (at least very recently), it has been sunny and beautiful.  Cold.  But sunny.  Sun makes me happy.

And when I'm happy, Hubert gets to go out on long walks around the park.  Thus, Hubert is happy.

He'll also walk in the mud and then try to jump on my lap. So so happy!

Speaking of happiness, order your Ready to Ship bag by Feb 8th (for US customers), and you'll have a very happy Valentine's gift recipient.

Just sayin'.

Love,
Jenny

Taking Great Photos Book Feature + Giveaway!

I get a lot of questions from aspiring and newbie Etsy shop owners for tips on becoming more successful in selling on Etsy.  My first and most important piece of advice is to take beautiful and clear photographs of your products.  Then I send them the link to how I went full-time selling on Etsy.

I am always on the quest to find ways to take better photos --there's always room for improvement!

Fortunately, a wonderful photography-whiz, Heidi Adnum recognized my passion for product photography and featured me in her book, The Crafter's Guide to Taking Great Photographs. (She also has an Etsy shop.)

I finally got my copy (!!!) and am participating in an online book tour to share my thoughts on the book!

This book covers literally everything you need to know about product photography in a language that's really easy to understand!

She introduces all the photography terms in an easy-to-digest way.  I've actually never had any formal training in photography, and it was great to actually learn about all of the terms and how they affect your final photo.

There are lots of diagrams on various ways to photograph a product under different light sources in order to achieve the perfect, clear and beautiful photograph that represents your product.  And you don't need all the fancy expensive photography equipment, either.

Plus, there's lots of features of different crafters and how they photograph their products (including all the info on how I photograph and edit my product photos).

This is definitely a book I'll go back to again and again for reference.

And guess what?

You get a chance to win a free copy!

To enter the giveaway, comment with a link to an online shop with product photography you really admire (Tell me why you like their photography, too!).  Remember to include your email address so we can contact you if you've won!

Last day for entries is Monday, Feb 6, 11:59 EST.
Winner will be chosen randomly and announced on this entry.

Or you can buy the book on Interweave or Amazon.

Good luck!

p.s. Behind-the-scenes from the photoshoot above. :)

** Update 2/7/2012: Congratulations to #7, OneLittleStar, our giveaway winner! Thank you all for entering. :)
